GCCC Holiday Food Basket Program

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

On Thursday, November 10, SERVPRO Glendora/San Dimas went to Williams Elementary School cafeteria to assist Glendora Community Coordinating Council (GCCC) in the sorting of canned food for their Holiday Food Basket Program.

The SEVPRO team sorted cans of vegetables, beans, corn, canned fruit, and other non perishable items, moving them from overflowing boxes and bags into organized and categorized groups on the cafeteria tables. Once sorted, another team of volunteers came through with packing lists and assembled boxes from the tables. Each box contains a variety of items in addition to vouchers. GCCC began collecting food late September by placing collection boxes around the Glendora area at locations such as the Glendora Public Library and Glendora Police Department. They also connected with institutions who have participated in past years to compile donations. The food was then collected and taken to Williams Elementary School where the sorting took place.

One key purpose of the GCCC is “to mobilize a voluntary association of community organizations; to support citizens; to enable groups using different techniques to agree on mutual goals.” SERVPRO was able to utilize our people and equipment resources to aid the GCCC on several occasions. SERVPRO used our box trucks to pick up and transport food to Williams Elementary.

SERVPRO learned of GCCC’s food project through the Glendora Police Department’s Community Services Officer Nita Ulloa-Pedroni. SERVPRO’s Sales Manager, Doug Beach, reached out to her looking for a new way for SERVPRO to serve the community and Ulloa-Pedroni suggested GCCC’s food sorting day.

Mr. Greg Gillham was the lead coordinator for the event, fostering the relationship between SERVPRO and GCCC. He is a retired electrician working with GCCC, Kiwanis Club, and other charitable organizations.

SERVPRO aided GCCC in completing approximately 250 food boxes that will be distributed to needy families in the Glendora community during this Holiday Season. GCCC will also deliver part of the food collected to the Shepards Pantry in Glendora.
